Northborough Select Board Appoints Officer, Accepts Trail Grant, Flags Fire Station Delay

Select Board · Meeting of July 13, 2026

Northborough Select Board appoints veteran officer, flags fire station delay, and weighs $3M dispatch decision. The board voted unanimously Monday to appoint Daniel Hanley, a seven-year Franklin Police Department veteran and Medal of Valor recipient, as a Northborough police officer effective July 27, Police Chief Brian Griffin telling the board "it's their loss and our gain." The board also approved a $128,006 year-end budget transfer from health insurance to the snow and ice account under MGL Chapter 44, Section 33B, as part of a total $243,000 deficit-closing package presented by Finance Director Jason Little, who noted gross snow and ice costs reached $887,550 before $214,910 in state aid. Town Administrator Stephanie Bacon warned that the new fire station is six months behind schedule, leaving $21.5 million in bond proceeds unspent and triggering a $1,400-per-year arbitrage monitoring requirement through financial advisor Hilltop Securities.

The board accepted a $58,300 MassTrails grant for a Boston Worcester Airline Trail feasibility study and began a formal discussion of whether to join a five-town regional dispatch consortium with Grafton, Boylston, Southborough, and Westborough, a decision shaped by roughly $3 million in communications infrastructure needs the town faces regardless of regionalization.
