Other Committee 2026-10-01 Part 2 · Meeting of October 1, 2026
Northborough's Appropriation Committee approved a $97,000 reserve-fund transfer to replace the fire department's failing hydraulic rescue tools. Deputy Fire Chief Neil Spacey said the current jaws-of-life equipment, dating to 2008 and 2016, has suffered failures during two recent crash responses, each adding roughly 10 minutes to extrication times. New Fire Chief Keith Darling, who started that day, and Captain Pat McManis joined the presentation.
Finance Director Jason Little said the ambulance revolving fund was too thin to absorb the one-time cost, citing a $435,000 fiscal 2027 transfer already committed from that fund. Member Tim Kalen called the expense "worth every penny." Member Terry Halloran warned the purchase consumes more than half the committee's $175,000 reserve fund in the first fiscal quarter and urged increasing that cushion going forward. The committee voted 4-0 to approve the transfer and also approved its July 15 minutes.
